Mining Expert Edward Simukonda says the recent 3 billion pounds offered by the United Kingdom to Zambia towards energy transition and mining will help address the illegalities and safety issues in the mining sector if properly utilized.
On Thursday last week, visiting UK Foreign Secretary James Cleverly offered his country’s support to Zambia’s mining, minerals and renewable energy sectors with 2.5 billion pounds of British private sector investment and 500 million pounds of government backed investments.
In an interview with Phoenix News, Mr Simukonda notes that the mining sector has suffered a lot of setbacks as a result of those in authority not making right decisions on how monies should be invested once received by government.
Mr Simukonda is of the view that the monies from the United Kingdom must be used to conduct proper mapping through involvement of geologists to identify areas where minerals are located and protect them to minimize illegal mining.
