The Lusaka City Council -LCC has recorded a fire incident that occurred at the University of Zambia-UNZA school of engineering lecture drawing room last evening, causing severe damage to the structural building and ceiling board.
LCC Public Relations Manager Chola Mwamba explains that the local authority received a call for emergency services from UNZA security personnel Waluka Mutumba who informed the council through its fire brigade that the school of engineering, lecture drawing room had caught fire.
Ms Mwamba says the fire was discovered around 20:00hours while Mr. Mutumba was conducting his routine patrols at the learning institution, and that the LCC fire brigade rushed to the scene and managed to quench the fire.
She says the fire has caused severe damage to the structural building and ceiling board while the extent of additional damages and their associated costs are still being assessed.
Ms Mwamba says preliminary investigations indicate that the fire originated from an electric fault on the lighting fluorescent tube, which caused localized heat and ignited the ceiling board.
She has since urged all members of the public to report fire or flood occurrences in their communities with immediate effect to ensure incidents are attended to in time.
