A couple from Siamabonka village in Moyo chiefdom, Pemba District, have died after drowning in Lwili river as the wife was escorting the husband from seeking medical attention.
They have been identified as 70-year-old Reuben Hamikosi, with the woman being Grace Chiyumuka, aged 51.
According to a report filed-in by the woman’s brother, the incident is estimated to have happened between 07:00 hours on 14th February 2025 to the morning of the next day, at Simangonye village.
Confirming the development in a statement to Byta FM News, Southern Province Commissioner of Police, Auxensio Daka, noted that on their way back from Moyo Mini Hospital, the couple found that the river had swelled due to the heavy rains.
He noted that when they attempted to cross to the other side, they both drowned and were only discovered around 07:00 hours on 15th February by 51-year-old Maxwell Siazwela who was inspecting his maize field along the banks of Lwili river.
Daka stated that following the report, Police Officers retrieved the woman’s remains found about 5 kilometers from the crossing point, with members of the public also joining efforts in searching for the man who was discovered 3 kilometers before the crossing point.
He said that no visible injuries were observed on the couple.
