The Lusaka City Council (LCC) has disclosed that it does not have enough resources to address the effects of the floods in the city.

In a statement today, LCC Public Relations Manager Chola Mwamba said the Council requires an estimated US$1 billion to address the issue for the next period of 25years.

Ms Mwamba called on companies and stakeholders to contribute to flood mitigation efforts through their corporate social responsibility initiatives.

She added that Lusaka’s flooding problems have become a major concern, particularly in parts of the Central Business District (CBD) and unplanned settlements in areas such as Chaisa, Garden, Kalikiliki, Kanyama, and Ng’ombe, among other places.

“The Local Authority has been working towards addressing the issue by: removing debris and silt from drains, building new drains in areas with inadequate drainage infrastructure, repairing and upgrading existing drains, culverts and bridges among other works,” she said.
