AN unidentified woman has abandoned a baby suspected to be only a few hours old along Mumbwa Road in the Kanyama area.
Police spokesperson Rae Hamoonga said the baby was discovered by a concerned member of the public who was passing through the premises of the old Zambeef building located on Mumbwa Road in Kanyama.
“Brief facts of the matter are that on Monday, April 14, 2025, at around 07:00 hours, Ms Ivy Mufwempa was on her way to the shops within her neighborhood and decided to pass through the premises of the old Zambeef building located along Mumbwa Road in the Kanyama area.
“While passing, she noticed what appeared to be a baby lying on the ground,” he said.
Mr Hamoonga explained that upon closer inspection, Ms Mufwempa discovered that it was a newly born baby girl, estimated to be just a few hours old.
“The infant was unclothed but alive and responsive. Ms. Mufwempa immediately picked up the baby and took her to Kanyama West Police Post, where she was advised to take the baby to the hospital. The child was promptly taken to Kanyama Level One Hospital, where she is currently receiving medical attention,” he said.
Mr Hamoonga added that police officers visited the scene, and an inquiry file for child desertion has since been opened.
He further stated that efforts to identify and apprehend the person responsible for the inhumane act have been launched.
“We appeal to members of the public who may have information that could assist in the investigations to come forward and report to the nearest police station,” Mr Hamoonga said.
