Three girls have died while swimming in an abandoned quarry dam in Kalamba Village in Kawambwa District.

The deceased have been identified as Grace Musonda and Belindah Kabwe both grade seven pupils at Kalamba Primary School and Beauty Mwansa, a grade nine pupil at Ntumba Chushi Secondary School.

Luapula Province Police Commissioner, Mwala Yuyi has confirmed the incident to ZANIS today which happened on Monday April 21, 2025.

He said the deceased were in the company of four others who managed to swim and survived.

Mr Yuyi explained that the seven juveniles went swimming in a nearby disused quarry site when the 3 girls met their fate.

“Seven girls went swimming at Chimbotela quarry site. The pit had accumulated water due to rains. The girls then decided to go to a deeper part of the pit holding each other, the four managed to swim ashore while the three girls got stuck in the mad and drowned,” Mr Yuyi explained.

Luapula Province Minister, Nason Musonda, says the government is saddened by the death of the girls barely a month when 11 workers of Kawambwa Sugar died in similar circumstances.

Mr Musonda, who visited the area and consoled the bereaved families, assured them of government’s support.

The bodies of the deceased have since been retrieved by the 48 Marine Commandos and burial was set for today.
