One person has died while four others are battling for their lives in Chipata district hospital, following two separate Road Traffic Accidents (RTAs) that occurred in Chipata and Kasenengwa districts, over the weekend.

The accident happened on Sunday around 20:30hrs, opposite DMI St. Eugene University, along the Great East Road.

In a statement to ZANIS, Eastern Province Police Commanding Officer Robertson Mweemba says, involved was an unregistered Gatoma motorbike which was being ridden by Misheck Banda, unknown age, who sustained fatal head injuries and died upon arrival at Chipata District Hospital.

“The motorbike had a broken tail light, deformed rear carrier and bend rear wheel. And on the same motorbike was Bruson Daka, aged 42, who sustained a deep cut on the back of the head, bruises on both legs and complained of general body pains, and currently admitted to Chipata Central Hospital,” he said.

Mr Mweemba says the accident happened when the driver of motor vehicle misjudged clearance distance or speed of the motorbike and in the process, hit into the rear part of the motorbike which was in front of him.
