Mansa Municipal Council has shut down Choppies Supermarket’s Mansa branch for persistent non-compliance with Public Health Regulations.

The closure, carried out yesterday, follows repeated failures by the store to address critical sanitation issues, including the discharge of raw sewage into the open environment from filled septic tanks and a clogged soak pit.

An initial inspection on 22 July 2025 uncovered the sewage discharge, prompting the Council to issue a seven day ultimatum. A follow-up visit on 30 July found no corrective action taken and a subsequent inspection on 6 August confirmed continued violations. Despite a 24-hour Statutory Nuisance Abatement Notice, the problem remained unresolved.

The Council obtained a court order to close the store until the matter is rectified. Those responsible are scheduled to appear in court on Monday, 18 August 2025.

This is according to a statement issued by Dorothy Ng’ambi, Assistant Public Relations Officer, Mansa Municipal Council.
