Concerns about public safety and a sore need for justice have been ignited recently when a man serving a 30 year prison sentence for defilement was released on African Freedom Day in 2020 through a Presidential pardon.
The 30 year sentence was given to Kabinda for defiling a little girl in Mufulira. However, his release has left the victim and her family devastated, as they continue to deal with the long-lasting impact of the crime.
During a recent visit, community activist RemmyKangwa spoke with the victim’s mother, Ms. SaraKunda, who narrated her daughter’s ongoingstruggles. The child, now traumatized and unableto attend school, suffers from vision problemsand depends on daily use of pads.
The mother, Ms. Kunda, is forced to scrape off a living through piece work. Kunda also appealed to the social welfare system which seems to be non-functional.
“The mother has been tirelessly seeking justice for her child, but nothing has been done. It is heartbreaking that the person who could hear her cries is the same one who pardoned the perpetrator,” has been Kangwa’s description in the retelling of this case.
