Police in Nyimba District of Eastern Province have detained a 37-year-old Lusaka man who was found with K16,200 in counterfeit notes that he attempted to deposit.
Eastern Province Police Commissioner Robertson Mweemba confirmed the incident, stating that it occurred today, August 18, 2025, between 10:18 and 11:25 hours in Katente Compound and Airstrip Compound, respectively.
Mr. Mweemba says in the first incident, Kezias Lungu, 35, reported that Bernard Lungu, 37, of Kanyama Compound in Lusaka, had deposited K5,000 in counterfeit notes, all in K200 denominations, at his booth.
He says in the second incident, Getrude Kasoka, 30, an Airtel agent in Airstrip Compound, also reported that Bernard Lungu of the same abode had deposited K10,000 in counterfeit K200 notes.
Mr. Mweemba said that fortunately, the agent detected the counterfeit notes during counting and quickly locked the man in the shop and informed others to help apprehend him.
He says Members of the public managed to apprehend him and handed him over to the Nyimba Police Station.
Mr. Mweemba says upon searching him, Police officers found additional K200 counterfeit notes amounting to K1,200, bringing the total amount of counterfeit money to K16,200.
He says all the counterfeit notes bore the same serial number.
Mr. Mweemba says the suspect is currently in custody, and the fake notes have been seized.
