A Toyota Probox valued at K110,000 with property worth K1,500 has been burnt to ashes after a suspected electrical fault in Lumezi District of Eastern Province.
Eastern Province Police Commissioner Robertson Mweemba confirmed the incident, which he said occurred yesterday, August 20, 2025, around 14:00 hours at Kazonde area, Chief Zumwanda.
Mr. Mweemba says the vehicle that burnt was a property of Daniel Chuulu, aged 40, of Chimwewe Compound in Chipata District.
Brief facts of the matter are that the driver, Simon Phiri, whilst driving from Lundazi heading to Chipata and while carrying a passenger who happened to be his friend, Owen Tembo, aged 23, the vehicle caught fire due to a suspected electrical fault.
Mr. Mweemba says whilst driving past Lumezi Trading Centre at an area known as Kazonde, the driver noticed some fumes of smoke coming out of the car’s aircon ventilators, hence triggering panic in him.
The Police Commissioner says the driver immediately stopped the vehicle and disembarked.
He says no sooner had the duo disembarked from the said motor vehicle than the flames increased, and efforts to quench the fire proved futile.
Mr. Mweemba says police were informed and quickly rushed to the scene and found the vehicle already gutted.
He says inside the vehicle were other items, such as a spare wheel valued at about K1,500, making a total value of damaged property to K111,500.
He says an inquiry has been opened.
