A 3-year-old girl has died after being hit by a motor vehicle while crossing the road in Chief Pembamoyo’s Chiefdom in the Vubwi District of the Eastern Province.

Eastern Province Police Commissioner Robertson Mweemba confirmed the toddler’s death, which occurred on Monday, August 25, 2025, around 18:30 hours in Kalumphe Village.

According to Mr Mweemba, the juvenile, Ruth Phiri, was crossing the road from right to left when she was hit by a Toyota Corolla driven by 44-year-old Msaime Tembo, who was travelling from east to west with two passengers on board.

The victim sustained a swollen head and right leg and died on the spot.

Mr Mweemba says the driver and his two passengers escaped unhurt.

He says the driver has been detained.
