I was deeply moved when my son and daughter-whom many of you know as Yo Maps and Kidist-asked me a thoughtful question: “mum, how do you handle public criticism?”
I told them this: Criticism often follows the weight of responsibility. People may speak harshly not because of who you are, but because of the position you hold. Titles attract scrutiny. But just as the seasons change, so too do the tides of public opinion. When the title is gone, so too will much of the noise.
As Vice President, I understand that the office I occupy comes with its share of praise and reproach. I do not take it personally. I serve with humility, knowing that the criticism is rarely about me as an individual-it is about the office I occupy and institution I represent. And when my time in office comes to an end, so too will the intensity of that scrutiny.
What must endure, however, is the integrity with which I serve.
