A 19-year-old Grade Seven pupil of Kombazi Primary School in Chama District of Eastern Province has allegedly taken his own life by taking cotton pesticides after his relationship with a classmate was opposed by her parents.

Eastern Province Police Commissioner Robertson Mweemba confirmed the incident, stating that it occurred on 20th November 2025 around 10:00 hours in Ng’anjo Chibwato Village, Chief Kambombo.

The deceased, Sylvester Chibanga, was in a romantic relationship with a 16-year-old girl who was also in Grade Seven at the same school.

It is alleged that the girl’s father, who is one of the teachers at the school, was against their relationship.

Mr. Mweemba says this did not sit well with the deceased, who later decided to take his own life.

The family has since been advised to proceed with burial as they suspect no foul play.

An inquiry file has since been opened.

Meanwhile, in a separate interview, one of the residents of the same village, who sought anonymity, revealed that the two had been in a relationship for some time and that both families had been against it.
