The army officer who led a failed coup in Benin, Lt. Col. Pascal Tigri, has fled to neighboring Togo, according to Benin government officials. Speaking anonymously, one official said authorities know Tigri’s location in Lome—reportedly near the residence of President Faure Gnassingbe—and plan to request his extradition. Togo has not yet commented. The attempted coup against President Patrice Talon heightened regional concerns following a series of military takeovers in West Africa. The coup failed after Nigeria deployed fighter jets at Benin’s request to drive the mutineers from a military base and state TV offices.
