A security guard aged between 30 and 35 years in Lundazi District is recovering in hospital after attempting to take his own life by jumping into a well after being identified as one of the suspects in a series of shop break-ins at Lundazi Main Market.
Eastern Province Police Commissioner Robertson Mweemba confirmed the incident and stated that it occurred today at about 07:20 hours in Chipazi Compound.
Brief facts are that Mr. Abraham Mbewe, a 38-year-old businessman, reported to police that his shop was among several shops that had been broken into by unknown persons at Lundazi Main Market.
Mr. Mweemba said one of the suspects who had been on the police wanted list in connection with the break-ins was Andrew Mtonga, a security guard at Lundazi Main Market.
The Police Commissioner explained that Mr. Mtonga was later spotted in Chipazi Compound, where members of the public attempted to apprehend him.
In an apparent attempt to evade arrest, the suspect allegedly jumped into a well within his yard.
Mr. Mweemba said police officers were immediately alerted and rushed to the scene, where they were assisted by officers from the Lundazi Fire Brigade.
The suspect was rescued from the well, which is about 20 metres deep with minimal water, and was taken to Lundazi District Hospital, where he is currently admitted in a stable condition.
