Two men narrowly escaped death after being trapped in a collapsed illegal mining pit at Sasali Gold Mines in Chief Sandwe’s Chiefdom in Lusangazi District of Eastern Province.

Eastern Province Police Commissioner Robertson Mweemba confirmed the incident, stating that it occurred today, 13th December 2025, around 02:00 hours.

Brief facts of the matter are that on 13th December 2025, around midnight, it started raining. At that time, four illegal gold miners sneaked into the mine and entered a pit to mine.

Mr. Mweemba said that two of the miners quickly came out of the pit after noticing it was collapsing, but the other two could not get out in time and became trapped.

The two who managed to escape later informed the police officers.

Mr. Mweemba added that police officers, together with members of the community, conducted a search at the collapsed pit and managed to rescue two men identified as Kelvin Zulu, aged 37, of Sichilima Village and Samson Phiri, aged 21, of Chimate Village, both of whom did not sustain any physical injuries.

The two were taken to a nearby clinic for medical check-ups and are reported to be in stable condition.
