The National Assembly has taken a decisive step in reshaping Zambia’s constitutional landscape after the Constitution of Zambia (Amendment) Bill No. 7 of 2025 sailed through its second reading.
In a vote that underscored the intensity of the moment, 131 Members of Parliament voted in favour, while only two opposed the Bill, and none abstained.
The outcome followed a charged debate on the floor of the House, marked by sharp legal arguments, political tension and deep divisions over the proposed amendments.
Supporters hailed the Bill as a necessary reform aimed at strengthening representation and governance, while critics warned of far-reaching consequences and questioned the process leading to the vote.
With the second reading now passed, Bill No. 7 advances to the next stage of parliamentary scrutiny, bringing Zambia a step closer to possible constitutional change.
As the nation watches closely, attention now shifts to what lies ahead in the remaining stages of the legislative process and how the final outcome may shape the country’s democratic future.
