Police in Chama District have opened investigations into allegations that voters were being offered packets of salt and cash in exchange for their voters’ cards.
The incident is alleged to have occurred on August 8, 2026, in Sitwe Village under Chief Kambombo.
Eastern Province Police Commanding Officer Robertson Mweemba said the matter was reported to Chama Police Station on August 9 by Jairos Mwandila, 41, an aspiring UPND councillor for Sitwe Ward.
Mwandila reported that he had received information that some people were allegedly offering registered voters one-kilogramme packets of coal salt and K20 in exchange for their voters’ cards.
According to the report, UPND members who went to verify the allegations allegedly found aspiring NRPUP Tonse Alliance councillor candidate Jackson Chilembo together with Jacob Chilembo, Rabson Mukisi and Kamutowa.
Police were informed that some villagers had already surrendered their voters’ cards, while 31 packets of coal salt were allegedly found at the scene and later confiscated.
No arrests have been made, with police saying the named suspects are reportedly on the run. A docket has since been opened and a manhunt launched as investigations continue.
