A 32-YEAR-OLD man of Ndola has been sentenced to 99 years’ imprisonment with hard labour for stabbing his father to death.

Peter Chileshe, of Chipulukusu Township, was convicted by the Ndola High Court on one count of murder.

The court heard that on June 25 this year, Chileshe murdered his father, Patrick Chileshe, after being reprimanded for coming home late.

Delivering judgment, High Court Judge Daniel Musonda said the prosecution had proved its case beyond reasonable doubt.

During trial, it was revealed that Chileshe was intoxicated at the time of the incident.

In his defence, Chileshe claimed that upon arriving home late, his father opened the door and allegedly assaulted him with a wooden stick.

He said he reacted by stabbing his father with a knife he had in his possession.

However, Judge Musonda rejected the defence of self-defence, noting that the accused had an opportunity to retreat.

The judge found there was no evidence that Chileshe was trapped or unable to avoid further confrontation.
