The Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU) National Coordinator, Mr. Norman Chipakupaku, accompanied by Zambia National Service (ZNS) Deputy Commander, Major General Reuben Mwewa, today toured critical infrastructure damaged by flooding in Lundazi District and assured the public that emergency rehabilitation works will be undertaken to restore connectivity within the next five days.
Among the damaged infrastructure is Mwase Bridge, the collapse of which has cut off four health facilities, while Mpamba Bridge along the Lundazi Road has isolated a large section of the population from accessing the central business area of the town.
The floods have also caused significant damage to the water treatment plant, residential households, and school infrastructure at two learning institutions within Lundazi District.
In response, DMMU, working in collaboration with ZNS, has deployed water bowsers to supply clean and safe drinking water to affected communities in order to prevent outbreaks of waterborne diseases.
The Unit is also providing relief assistance, including mealie meal and other food essentials, chlorine, and tents to accommodate more than 250 households whose homes have collapsed.
In total, approximately 300 households have been affected by the flooding in Lundazi District. Meanwhile, the neighbouring district of Lumezi, which lies downstream, has also reported flooding incidents.
