Melvin Mweemba wishes to strongly urge the Government of the Republic of Zambia to take decisive action in addressing the growing public health crisis caused by the widespread consumption of junk food and highly processed spices imported into the country.
Zambia is currently facing an alarming rise in lifestyle-related diseases. A significant number of adults are now suffering from high blood pressure, diabetes, and other cardiovascular conditions. In addition, the country has witnessed an increase in cancer cases, including the loss of many prominent citizens. While multiple factors contribute to these illnesses, growing evidence and public health observations point to unhealthy diets—particularly excessive consumption of highly processed and junk foods—as a major contributor.
Many of the imported junk foods and artificial spices available on the Zambian market contain high levels of salt, unhealthy fats, sugar, and chemical additives, which pose serious long-term health risks. These products have gradually replaced traditional and natural diets that once sustained healthier communities.
Melvin Mweemba therefore calls on the Government to consider the following measures:
Restrict or regulate the importation of junk food and highly processed spices, especially those proven to have negative health impacts.
Strengthen food quality and safety standards to protect consumers from harmful additives.
Promote the consumption of natural and locally produced foods, including traditional grains, vegetables, fruits, and organic spices.
Support local farmers and food producers, which will not only improve public health but also strengthen the local economy.
Increase public awareness campaigns on healthy eating and lifestyle choices.Protecting the health of Zambians must be a national priority.
Preventive action through food policy reform will reduce pressure on the healthcare system, increase productivity, and improve overall quality of life.
Melvin Mweemba believes that with strong political will and collaboration between government, health experts, and citizens, Zambia can reverse the current trend and build a healthier nation for present and future generations.
