Two children have tragically drowned in a shallow well in Chasefu District, Eastern Province.
Eastern Province Police Commissioner Robertson Mweemba confirmed the incident, stating that it occurred today, 17th January 2026, around 11:00 hours at Kaloba Village, Chief Magodi.
Mr. Mweemba said that 35-year-old Huston Nyoni reported that two children, aged 2 years 3 months and 1 year 5 months, drowned in a well located about 500 metres from their home.
Brief facts are that, earlier in the morning, around 06:00 hours, Huston Nyoni and his wife, Edah Nyoni, had left home for their maize field, leaving the children under the care of their 10-year-old daughter.
At around 11:00 hours, the daughter, Angela, realized the children were missing and began searching for them.
She later discovered that they had drowned in the shallow well and informed her aunt, who then alerted the parents.
Police officers rushed to the scene and found that the children’s bodies had already been retrieved.
Mr. Mweemba said that a physical inspection indicated both bodies were intact, with no visible injuries.
The bodies were handed over to the family, who opted to bury the children without a post-mortem, as no foul play was suspected.
Mr. Mweemba added that investigations into the incident are ongoing.
