A Lusaka based journalist, Alphonso Kasongo, has been attacked by suspected UPND cadres in Lusaka’s Linda area while covering party activities.

Mr. Kasongo told Sun FM TV News that the incident occurred around 18:30 hours as he was filming an event organised by local party leadership.

He said a group of youths clad in UPND regalia stormed the gathering and caused a violent commotion, prompting him to start recording the situation.

According to Mr. Kasongo, the cadres then turned on him and attacked him for filming what he described as violent behaviour.

The Power FM News Editor described the incident as horrifying, stating that he was beaten and threatened with taser guns during the ordeal.

He also expressed gratitude to members of the public who intervened and helped save his life.

A video of the incident has since gone viral, in which the journalist is heard identifying himself as a media professional while individuals are heard charging taser guns at him.

Meanwhile, Free Press Initiative founder Joan Chirwa has condemned the attack and called on President Hakainde Hichilema to unequivocally denounce the violence against journalists.

She further urged the Head of State to call his party’s cadres to order and ensure an immediate end to the assault and harassment of media personnel.
