A 51-year-old man of Chama District in Eastern Province has been k!lled by an elephant.

Eastern Province Police Commanding Officer Robertson Mweemba confirmed the incident, which occurred on May 5, 2026, around 20:00 hours in Chaumbwa Village in Chief Chifunda’s chiefdom.

Mr. Mweemba said the matter was reported to police on May 6, 2026, at about 16:00 hours by the Department of National Parks and Wildlife (DNPW).

He identified the deceased as Obies Ng’uni of Kawalawala Village in Chief Chifunda’s chiefdom.

Mr. Mweemba explained that earlier on the material day, around 16:00 hours, the deceased had gone fishing on the Luangwa River in the company of four other men.

However, while fishing later that evening, an elephant charged at the group. The four companions managed to escape unhurt, but Mr. Ng’uni was attacked and k!lled by the animal.

Police have since opened an inquiry file, and officers, together with personnel from the Department of National Parks and Wildlife, have been dispatched to the area to control the elephant.
