A 48-year-old bricklayer has died after allegedly being assaulted at his home in Mulenga Compound in Kitwe, in a case now under police investigation.

In a statement made available to Mafken News, Mwala Yuyi said the matter was reported on 13 May 2026 at Mulenga Police Post under Wusakile Police Station.

Mr. Yuyi identified the deceased as Joe Phiri, who was found lying weak and unable to speak at an unmarked house in Mulenga Compound. He said relatives, together with two men who identified themselves as friends of the victim, took him to the police post where an assault report was recorded and a medical report form issued.

He explained that police officers were unable to obtain a statement from Phiri due to his condition. The victim was later rushed to Chamboli Level One Hospital, where he died at about 13:30 hours.

Mr. Yuyi further revealed that police officers who visited the scene found a small bloodstain on the sack where the deceased had reportedly been sleeping.

He added that a tenant at the house informed officers that Phiri had been staying there for about three weeks with another man he had invited to live with him.

According to the tenant, the two men were heard quarrelling on the evening of 11 May 2026, followed by sounds of a beating. The following morning, she reportedly saw Phiri with injuries to the head, abdomen, legs, and lips, while the other man had already left the house.

The body has since been taken to Kitwe Central.
