The United Party for National Development (UPND) has today expelled 15 members allegedly involved in acts of violence and disorder that erupted during the filing of nomination papers by former party member Garry Nkombo for the Mazabuka Central parliamentary seat as an independent candidate.
In a statement issued today, UPND Secretary General Batuke Imenda strongly condemned the violence witnessed at the Mazabuka Civic Centre, describing the conduct as unacceptable and contrary to the party’s democratic values and principles.
Mr. Imenda said the ruling party respects the Constitution and the rule of law, which allows any eligible citizen to contest elections either through a political party or as an independent candidate.
He stressed that violence, intimidation and attempts to block candidates from exercising their democratic rights have no place in the UPND or the country’s democratic process.
According to the statement, the expelled individuals were identified through preliminary investigations into the disturbances that occurred during today’s nomination process.
Mr. Imenda further clarified that the party does not condone lawlessness, hooliganism or political violence in any form, adding that those responsible acted outside the party’s values, discipline and authority.
The UPND has since called on the Zambia Police Service and other law enforcement agencies to move swiftly and professionally in bringing all perpetrators to book regardless of their political affiliation or status.
The party also reiterated President Hakainde Hichilema’s repeated position that anyone who breaks the law will face the consequences individually regardless of their standing in society.
Meanwhile, the UPND has urged its members and supporters across the country to remain calm, disciplined and focused on issue-based campaigns ahead of the August 13, 2026 General Elections.
