The Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) has announced major breakthroughs in its ongoing efforts to combat drug trafficking, resulting in multiple arrests and the seizure of significant quantities of illicit substances across several provinces.
In the Western Province, a joint operation between the DEC and the Zambia Police Service led to the arrest of 46-year-old Alex Chitoma in Limulunga Compound. Chitoma, a known drug kingpin on the Commission’s watchlist, was apprehended for trafficking 214.72 kilogrammes of loose cannabis. Authorities identified him as a repeat offender responsible for supplying the substance throughout Mongu and surrounding districts.
In Livingstone, officers intercepted Precious Mpofu, a 39-year-old Zimbabwean national, at the border post as she attempted to enter Zambia. During a routine check, authorities discovered 1.146 kilogrammes of high-grade cannabis, 144 bottles of Benylin with Codeine, and 12 bottles of Hash Jelly Oil, a potent cannabis concentrate, concealed in her luggage and vehicle boot.
Additionally, in Nakonde, the DEC arrested 42-year-old Elizabeth Nankamba at the Isoka Police Checkpoint while she was traveling toward Kitwe. A search of her vehicle revealed 24 bundles of Khat Miraa, totaling 14.9 kilogrammes, which investigations suggest was intended for distribution on the Copperbelt.
All suspects remain in lawful custody awaiting their court appearances. The Commission has reiterated its commitment to using intelligence-led operations to identify and prosecute offenders, while continuing to collaborate with the public to mitigate the threats posed by illicit drug trafficking.
