What began as a race through the streets of Lusaka ended in life-changing victories for Brenda Mumbi and Weaver Simalumba, whose determination and resilience earned them top honours in the 2026 Lusaka City Council 21.1-kilometre Half Marathon.

Their remarkable achievement is now inspiring young Zambians to believe that discipline, hard work and perseverance can open doors to a brighter future.

Mumbi, a Zambia National Service (ZNS) civilian employee, crossed the finish line first in the women’s category, while Simalumba, a Sub-Inspector with the Zambia Correctional Service, claimed victory in the men’s race.

For their outstanding performances, each walked away with a 30×30 residential plot and K10,000 in prize money, turning their athletic success into a life-changing reward.

Speaking after her victory, Mumbi said she was overwhelmed with excitement, describing the prize as something she never imagined she would win.

She said the plot would have a significant impact on her life and thanked the Lusaka City Council for giving participants such an opportunity.

Mumbi, who lives with her mother, said she could not wait to share the good news with her, adding that her mother would be thrilled because neither of them expected she would return home as a plot owner.

She also encouraged people to participate in sporting activities, saying such events can change people’s lives.

Speaking at the same event, Simalumba said he was excited to emerge victorious in what he described as a highly competitive and tough race.

He said winning both the plot and the cash prize was beyond his expectations and attributed his success to the grace of God.

Simalumba further urged young people to embrace hard work and discipline, saying success cannot be achieved without dedication.

He revealed that he regularly trains and maintains his physical fitness, adding that exercise is beneficial for everyone.

The victories of Mumbi and Simalumba are a powerful reminder that success is built on discipline, consistency and self-belief.

The 2026 Lusaka City Council Half Marathon provided a platform that promoted healthy living and encouraged physical fitness.
