A domestic dispute that had already been reported to police ended in tragedy on Wednesday after three people, including a state lawyer, were found dead following a shooting in Lusaka’s Makeni Villa.

The victims have been identified as Innocent Nyambe, 39, a state lawyer, his elder sister Theresa Nyambe, 43, and her husband, Clifford Chileshe, 45.

Police say the incident happened at around 15:00 hours on July 8. Officers who responded to the scene found all three with gunshot wounds.

Investigators believe the shooting was connected to a domestic violence complaint Theresa had lodged against her husband just two days earlier.

According to police, Theresa reported the alleged assault at Kanyama Police Station on July 6. She told officers that her husband had attacked her during a dispute at their home, leaving her with a cut on the upper lip, swollen eyes, a bleeding nose and body pains. A case was opened, and she was issued with a medical report form.

On Wednesday, Theresa returned to the Victim Support Unit to check on the progress of the case. Her younger brother, Innocent, accompanied her.

After police issued a call-out notice requiring Chileshe to report to the station, the siblings later went to the family home.

It was there, police believe, that the situation took a deadly turn.

Preliminary investigations indicate that Chileshe allegedly opened fire shortly after the pair arrived. Innocent is believed to have been shot first inside the house before Theresa was shot outside near the entrance. Police suspect Chileshe then returned indoors and fatally shot himself.

When officers arrived, they found Theresa lying outside the house. The front door was locked, forcing police to gain entry, where they discovered the bodies of Innocent and Chileshe inside.

Police recovered eight spent cartridges from the scene, along with two firearms a CANIK pistol and a Millennium G2 pistol. Both weapons have been seized and will undergo forensic examination as part of the investigation.

A Nissan Navara and a Subaru Impreza found at the property have also been impounded to assist with investigations.

The bodies of the three deceased have since been taken to the University Teaching Hospital Mortuary for post-mortem examinations.

Police say investigations into the circumstances surrounding the shooting are still underway.
