Thousands of residents in several parts of Lusaka are gradually gaining better access to clean water following the completion of 20 Constituency Development Fund (CDF)-supported borehole projects undertaken by the Lusaka City Council over the past four years.

The projects, implemented between 2022 and 2026, were designed to improve water supply in communities where residents have for years struggled with unreliable access to safe water.

According to the council, the boreholes have been installed at schools, health facilities, markets and residential areas spread across Lusaka Central, Matero, Munali, Mandevu and Kanyama constituencies.

In Lusaka Central, learners and surrounding communities are expected to benefit from new boreholes drilled at Thorn Park Primary School, Burma Primary School and Bauleni Combined School.

Matero Constituency has seen the construction of the Madimba Water Reticulation System, alongside a solar-powered borehole and a new water reticulation network at Matero Stadium.

In Mandevu, the council drilled a borehole at Mutambe Ground and completed two commercial boreholes linked by transmission pipelines in Ng’ombe Compound to strengthen water supply in the growing community.

Munali was not left out. A borehole at Kamanga Clinic has been rehabilitated, while improvements have also been made to the water reticulation system at Mahatma Gandhi Community Ground.

Residents of Linda Compound in Kanyama are also among those expected to benefit after the installation of solar-powered boreholes equipped with water reticulation systems.

Beyond drilling new boreholes, the council says it has continued rehabilitating existing water infrastructure at public facilities, including Chunga Market and Lubuto, where water reticulation systems have also been upgraded.

LCC says the programme will continue, with additional solar-powered boreholes and water reticulation projects already planned for 2026 as part of efforts to extend reliable water services to more communities across the capital.

The local authority says expanding access to clean and safe water remains one of its priorities and has pledged to continue working with local communities and other stakeholders to improve water services in areas that need them most.
