More than 40 houses in three villages of Shibuyunji district in Central Province had their roofs blown off on Tuesday following a hailstorm while Nampundwe area was left in darkness as some Zesco power lines fell in the process.

According to Zambia Daily mail, Shibuyunji District Commissioner Alfred Shaputu told ZANIS that the houses which had their roofs blown off are in Shamulumba, Wombats and Shimatete villages, all within Nampundwe.

Mr Shaputu said the hailstorm, which was experienced between 15:00 hours and 16:00 hours, blew away roofing sheets of about 40 houses, leaving close to 250 people homeless.

Some community members also lost livestock while in one shop goods worth K6,000 were destroyed.

Mr Shaputu said two people were injured but are currently stable and receiving treatment.

Most parts of the country experienced rains on Tuesday which left some households without power while one school in Mazabuka had its roofs blown off.

Southern Province meteorologist Victor Bupe cautioned against parking vehicles or seeking shelter under trees when it is raining as the likelihood of destructive thunderstorms is high because of the high temperatures being experienced.
