The Zambia National Service Commander Lieutenant General Maliti Solochi has promoted Judoka and Service man Steven Munga’ndu from the rank of Private to Corporal and subsquently to Sergeant after he won five medals at international competions from 2019 to date.

Munga’ndu won a silver medal at the Dakar African open championship in 2020 and four bronze medals at the Yaunde open African championship in 2019, Madagascar open championship in 2020, Oran Algerian African championship and Dakar Senegal African open championships in 2022.

Lt Gen Solochi said the judoka deserves to be celebrated for putting up a splendid performance and raising the country’s flag higher.

”You carried a heavy baggage on your shoulders by showcasing a splendid performance which has lifted the country’s flag much higher.

After a discussion with my deputy, we have resolved that we promote you from the rank of private to corporal and subsquently to sergeant,” Lt Gen Solochi said.

He said this yesterday when he received medals from Zambia Judo Association President Alfred Foloko and later presented them to Munga’ndu.

Lt Gen Solochi said ZNS will continue to invest in sports to curb juvenile deliquency and other vices among youths.

”Sports is providing an alternative to youth unemployment and it must therefore be taken as a business as opposed to being a skill of keeping fit and entertaining spectators,” He said.

And Judoka Association President Alfred Foloko commended Lt Gen Solochi for elevating Munga’andu from private to sergeant.

Mr Foloko said Lt Gen Solochi is walking the talk in line with the President’s directive of promoting the growth of sports in the country.

”We are happy with the promotion of Munga’ndu from private to corporal and subsquently to the rank of sergeant as this will encourage the athlete to work harder and continue winning more medals for our country,” he said.

Mr Foloko urged Munga’ndu to remain disciplined and keep working hard if he is to continue excelling in his career.
