A 16-YEAR-OLD Grade Nine pupil in Chief Sekute’s area in Kazungula has drowned during a swimming escapade in the Zambezi River with two of his friends.

The victim identified as Nyumbu was swimming in the company of his friends when the incident occurred on Wednesday at Nkalata village.

Both Zambia Police Service deputy public relations officer Danny Mwale and induna Michael Mundada have confirmed the incident in separate interviews.

By Friday evening, the body of Nyumbu had not yet been retrieved.

Induna Mundanda said the incident happened at Nkalata village which is close to a section of Zambezi River.

He said while the three boys were swimming in the river, Nyumbu’s friends noticed that he had gone under water.

“After searching for a while, the two boys got out of the water and headed to their friend’s home and narrated the ordeal to his parents,” he said.

He said a search party consisting of Nyumbu’s parents and some members of the community tried to look for him but to no avail.

Induna Mundanda said the matter was then reported at Kazungula Police Station.

Induna Mundanda said last year a relative of the late Nyumbu also drowned in the Zambezi River. This is contained in a report published by Zambia Daily Mail.
