The SUSPENSION of Full Blood Count Testing at the country’s largest hospital, the University Teaching Hospital (UTH) due to failure by Government to procure reagents and the persistent shortage of drugs and general medical supplies across the country is an EMERGENCY CRISIS situation that needs full and swift Government response in order to save lives and preserve the health of our citizens.

The persistent shortage of drugs and other medical supplies across the country has reached ALARMING levels and we call upon the President to immediately invoke his Emergency Powers established by Cap 108 of the Laws of Zambia and declare the current health situation in the country a National Disaster.

If UTH, the nation’s biggest health facility has no reagents, just think of how serious and desperate the situation is in rural areas. This is a disaster and Government must act now to save lives.

If there is one thing any Government should never toy with is the issue of health because health is life. Mr. President, please listen to the cries of our mothers and children who have continued to lose their loved ones to curable ailments due to lack of drugs in the hospitals and for once do the right thing.
