(ZNBC) Zambia has recorded 24,612 road accidents from January to September this year.

The Road Transport and Safety Agency -RTSA says this represents a 31 percent increase from last year.

RTSA Board Chairperson Aallen Mate says 1,674 of the road accidents were serious and resulted in 1 ,680 deaths.

Mr. Mate says this also indicates a 10.4 percent increase from 2021, adding that 47 percent of the victims were pedestrians who lost their lives to careless driving.

He has called on motorists to prioritize road safety as they celebrate the festive season.

Mr. Mate was speaking during the launch of the 2022 road safety week in Lusaka.
