Copperbelt Police have apprehended five people in Ndola for allegedly attempting to smuggle about 1,000 bags of mealie-meal into the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The mealie-meal was concealed in two containerized trucks, which were allegedly being escorted by 4 armed soldiers, but was later intercepted in Kawama Plantation.

Copperbelt Province Police Commissioner, Peacewell Mweemba confirmed, saying the suspects were apprehended by a Zambia Army officer, who was patrolling the area around 23 hours, on Tuesday night.

Mr. Mweemba has said one of the suspects, confirmed to police that the soldiers escorting the consignment were allegedly paid 10,000 Kwacha.

And in Luanshya, police have recovered 129 by 25 kilogramme bags of breakfast mealie-meal, which were concealed in fish baskets.

Mr. Mweemba says 10 suspects have been apprehended in connection with the mealie meal and jointly charged with the alleged offence of assembling for the Purpose of Smuggling.

All the suspects are currently detained at Luanshya Central Police Station and will appear in court soon.
