A 26-Year old pregnant Woman in Chama district of Eastern province has been killed by an elephant.

The incident occurred around 09:00 hours in Chief Chifunda’s area yesterday.

The deceased has been identified as Joyce Lungu of Teweti village.

According to Mapamba ward Councilor Sam Mushanga, the deceased who was in the company of her husband, met her fate on their way from Teweti village, where they had gone to attend a funeral of their grandmother.

Mr. Mushanga says after a funeral program, the duo journeyed back to Joloti village and on the way, the two met a herd of elephants which later started to chase after them.

The Councilor says the husband identified as, Kela Ngulube managed to run away from the charged elephants and unfortunately the wife was attacked and trampled to death.

Mr. Mushanga says he is saddened by the death of the woman and called on government to find a lasting situation to the issue of Human-animal conflict in the area.

And Chama District Department of National Parks and Wildlife-DNPW Area Warden Victor Makombe says the department is devastated by the death of woman.

Mr. Makombe says government through DNPW is doing its best in making sure that lives of people are protected, despite the area being in a Game Management.

The deceased has left behind 4 children and she will be put to rest today in her village.
