Chief Mailo of the Lala people of Serenje District has mandated co-operatives in his chiefdom to cultivate at least five hectares of maize fields.
He said the move would help promote food security and economic stability.
The traditional leader stated that this initiative would enhance productivity and provide sustainable livelihoods for his people.
Chief Mailo further handed over a tractor to his subjects, explaining that modern equipment would help increase yields and reduce manual labour.
He urged Ward Development Committees (WDCs) and area councillors to ensure that Constituency Development Funds are used transparently and directed towards farming initiatives.
He stressed that leaders should prioritise the needs of the people rather than personal interests.
Expressing concern over low enrolment numbers in skills training and secondary school bursaries, Chief Mailo called for greater support for young people in his chiefdom.
He emphasised the importance of education, stating that it is the key to a brighter future and urging stakeholders to ensure that children have access to the necessary resources.
The Chief also announced that the Chiefdom has been allocated a mobile phone network tower awaiting installation, stating that improved communication services would connect his people to vital opportunities.
He highlighted efforts to redeem fertilisers locally, explaining that easier access to farming inputs would supplement the Farmer Input Support Programme (FISP) and strengthen agriculture.
