Kafue Police Station is investigating a shooting incident in which a 23-year-old male sustained a gunshòt wound, and a suspect was found in possession of a homemade fírearm without a licence.
The incident was reported to the station on June 20, 2025, at around 04:30 hours by Mr. Christopher Chindila , aged 60, of unknown house number in Bata Site and Service, Kafue, who is employed at Kafue District Hospital. He reported via mobile phone that a male patient identified as Joseph Sikaonga, aged 23, of unknown house number in Garden Compound, Lusaka, had been received at the hospital with a gunshòt wound to his right shoulder. The shòòting reportedly occurred on June 19, 2025, at around 22:00 hours along the Great North Road in the area between Ngwenya Village under Chief Nkomesha and Kafue District.
According to the initial account provided by the victim, he was accidentally shòt by his nephew, Pearson Kalengo, aged 23, of Mtendere Compound, Lusaka. The two had travelled to Kafue River Motel for leisure and were returning to Lusaka using a Toyota Belta when the vehicle developed a mechanical fault.
It was during this time that the suspect retrieved a homemade pist0l from the vehicle and, while attempting to demonstrate how it operates, accidentally discharged the weap0n, striking the victim in the right shoulder
Police officers who rushed to the hospital confirmed the incident. Preliminary investigations led to the recovery of the said fírearm, one (1) round of ammunitiòn, and one empty cartridge—all of which have been secured as exhibits.
The suspect is currently in police custody and has been charged for being found in possession of a fírearm without a licence and for the unlawful discharge of a fírearm. The victim remains admitted to Kafue District Hospital and is in stable condition. A docket has been opened, and investigations are ongoing.
