Seven people, including two children, have sustained serious injuries in a road traffic accident in Chama District of Eastern Province.
Eastern Province Police Commanding Officer Robertson Mweemba confirmed the development, stating that the accident occurred yesterday, 22nd April,2026, at Lonekela area along the Chama–Lundazi Road, about eight kilometres south of Chama Town.
Mr Mweemba said the accident involved a Fuso Truck, registration number ABH 4063, which was loaded with assorted goods and was being driven from south to north by 42-year-old Askson Zimba of Makeni A Compound in Chama District.
He explained that the driver sustained a painful neck, bruises on the left eyebrow and general body pains.
Mr Mweemba further said six passengers who were on board the truck also sustained various injuries.
He says the victims include Andrew Moonga, aged 41, who suffered a fractured left leg, a cut on the head and other injuries, while Faggy Mbuzi, aged 28, sustained a deep cut on the left side of the back and general body pains.
Others are Tukizu Phiri, aged 35, who sustained a painful neck and general body pains, and Tamara Nyirenda, aged 26, who sustained a cut on the left knee, a painful left hand, pain in both the left and right ribs, and general body pains.
He says Jessy Phiri, aged 9, sustained bruises on the forehead, a painful right leg, a painful right hand and general body pains, while John Phiri, aged 2, sustained general body pains.
He said all the victims were rushed to Chama District Hospital where they are currently admitted.
Mr Mweemba says the accident is believed to have happened due to overloading, explaining that the vehicle failed to ascend a hill, started rolling backwards and eventually veered off the road before landing in a ditch.
