POLICE in Kitwe District have instituted investigations into the dumping of a one-day-old baby girl in a bush near the Mopani Copper Mines area in Chamboli Township.
The incident happened around yesterday 15:00 hours in an area known as D.
Copperbelt Province Police Commanding Officer Mwala Yuyi said a security guard at MCM, Field Kasongo, 40, reported that while on duty, he was approached by two young boys who informed him that there was a dumped baby crying in a nearby bush.
“Police in Kitwe are investigating a case involving a one-day-old baby who was dumped in a bush near MCM premises by unknown people,” he said.
Mr Yuyi said brief facts of the matter are that around 14:00 hours, Mr Kasongo was on duty when the boys approached him and informed him that they had discovered a dumped baby in the bush.
He said Kasongo immediately notified the police, who rushed to the scene.
Mr Yuyi said upon arrival, officers found that the infant had already been picked up by a passer-by, Dyness Mwila, who rushed the baby to Chamboli Level One Hospital for medical attention.
He said police later visited the hospital, where medical personnel confirmed that the child is a one-day-old female baby who was found alive and in stable condition but remained under observation.
