The Kitwe District Health Office has reported persistently high numbers of sexually transmitted infections –STIs- between 2025 and 2026.

Data from the district shows that more than 1,600 STI cases were recorded in the final quarter of 2025, while 1,652 cases were reported in the first quarter of 2026.

Kitwe District Health Director FRANCIS LIYWALI has warned that the high rate of STIs among young people could have long-term consequences, including infertility and neurological complications.

Dr. LIYWALI says more than 60 per cent of all STI cases recorded were among people aged between 20 and 24.

Meanwhile, Kitwe District Commissioner ONCEMORE NGONOMO has described the trend as worrying and urged young people to reflect on their behaviour and make choices that protect their long-term health.
