A 47-Year-Old Woman in Chief Chikwa’s Chiefdom of Chama District is receiving treatment at Lundazi District Hospital after she was attacked by an elephant while attempting to chase it away from her banana plantation.

Eastern Province Police Commanding Officer Robertson Mweemba confirmed the incident, which occurred around 03:00 hours today.

Mr. Mweemba identified the victim as Terry Zimba, a peasant farmer of Vyazala Village.

Mr. Mweemba explained that the victim had gone to bed around 21:00 hours on Saturday, July 4, before being awakened by unusual noises outside her house at around 03:00 hours.

He said Ms. Zimba went outside with a torch and discovered an elephant feeding on her banana plants. As she attempted to scare the animal away, it charged at her and attacked her.

The victim sustained a cut to her right ear, cuts on both thighs and complained of general body pains.

Mr. Mweemba said villagers who heard her screams rushed to the scene and managed to rescue her before she was taken to Lunda District Hospital, where she is admitted and receiving treatment.

He added that officers from the Department of National Parks and Wildlife-DNPW have since been deployed to the area to control the wild animals and prevent further attacks.
