Eastern Province Police Commanding Officer Robertson Mweemba has confirmed that one suspected criminals lost his life and an accomplice was seriously hurt after a mob caught up with a gang that attacked a microfinance worker along the Chadiza Road in Chipata.
According to police, the incident unfolded on Monday evening around 19:30 hours near a bridge, where four men armed with sticks ambushed 32-year-old Ziyelesa Mbewe. Mr. Mbewe, an employee of Agola Micro Finance Limited, was riding a company motorcycle from Chadiza toward Chipata when the group struck him on the head, inflicting severe injuries before fleeing with the bike.
Despite his wounds, the victim managed to raise the alarm, prompting local residents to quickly mobilize and track down the attackers. Two members of the group were cornered during the citizen response.
One of the suspects died during the incident, while the second, identified as 34-year-old Musanide Zulu, suffered grave injuries and was admitted to Chipata Central Hospital under police guard. The remaining two suspects managed to escape, though the stolen motorcycle was recovered.
Meanwhile, Mr. Mbewe was also admitted to Chipata Central Hospital for treatment, and police efforts to find the fleeing culprits are ongoing.
