Malawi’s Former State House Deputy Chief of Staff Godfrey Arthur Jalale who was arrested last week Friday on allegations that he stole four German Shepherd dogs from that country’s State House today appeared before the court.

Details presented in the Chief Resident Magistrate Court today showed that the dogs, valued at 4 million Malawian kwacha (about 52, 800 Zambian kwacha), were taken from the premises between 19 Sept and 4 Oct. The charge sheet was read out before the court, outlining the single count of theft but Jalale pleaded not guilty.

Prosecutors asked the court to keep him in custody, arguing that investigations remain incomplete and that the missing dogs have not yet been recovered.

They also said further detention was necessary to allow police to finalise the inquiry.
