In a move that’s already getting people talking, Twashuka Ward “lawmaker” Matthews Musonda has this afternoon filed in his application for possible adoption under the UPND ticket—setting his sights beyond the council chamber and onto the Bwana Mukubwa parliamentary seat in Ndola District.

Musonda, who is currently serving as councilor for Twashuka Ward, is making a calculated political shift from local leadership to national representation.

A former PF councilor who only recently crossed over to UPND two months ago, his latest move signals growing ambition—and confidence.

His decision, he says, is not just political—it’s practical.

Musonda points to long-standing challenges in Bwana Mukubwa Constituency, particularly water shortages, poor road networks, and stalled infrastructure development.

According to him, these are issues that require influence and authority beyond the ward level.

“You can only do so much as a councilor. Real decisions are made at the top—and sometimes those decisions don’t reflect what people on the ground need,” he said.

In a statement that may raise eyebrows, Musonda also highlighted the often uneasy relationship between Members of Parliament and councilors.

He suggests that competing interests and lack of alignment have slowed down development, leaving communities underserved.

Despite that, he says he has the backing of fellow councilors and strong grassroots support, which he believes will play a key role in his adoption bid.

Musonda has also aligned himself with the vision of Hakainde Hichilema, pledging to campaign not only for his own adoption but also for the President’s continued leadership.

From “ward lawmaker” to aspiring MP, Musonda’s move blurs the lines—and perhaps that’s exactly the point.
