An 18-year-old girl in Mufulira has been arrested for allegedly publishing false information electronically in which she falsely claimed she had been gang-raped.
Copperbelt Province Police Commissioner MWALA YUYI says this occurred on April 22,2026 between 07:00 hours and 12:00 hours.
Mr. YUYI says a member of the public reported coming across a social media post showing a young schoolgirl lying on the ground, accompanied by claims that she had been gang-raped by suspected junkies in Mufulira.
In a statement, Mr. YUYI said police acted on the report and launched investigations, which led to the arrest of the girl, aged 18, of Chibolya Township in Mufulira.
He said the suspect was interviewed in the presence of her elder sisters, during which she admitted to creating and sharing the post on her Facebook account.
Mr. YUYI said she has since been charged with publishing false information electronically.
A docket has been opened, and the suspect remains in custody.
The arrest comes at a time when Zambia has recently introduced legal provisions classifying rape and other sexual offences as non-bailable, reflecting the seriousness with which such offences are treated under the law.
