The body of a 54-year-old man of Twapia Township in Ndola, who went missing five days ago, has been found in a decomposed state along the banks of the Kafubu River.
Copperbelt Police Commanding Officer Mwala Yuyi confirmed the incident and identified the deceased as Richard Sinoya Phiri of Bunga area in Twapia.
Mr Yuyi said the matter was reported to Twapia Police Station yesterday by the deceased’s niece, Taonga Lungu, 40, of Lubuto area, after the family received information that Mr Phiri’s body had been discovered near the river.
He said Mr Phiri left home on May 17 around 09:00 hours and informed his wife that he was going to visit a friend, although he did not disclose the person’s identity.
“Around 18:00 hours on the same day, the deceased’s mobile phone stopped ringing and his whereabouts became unknown until his body was discovered four days later,” Mr Yuyi said.
Mr Yuyi said police officers visited the scene and found the body in a decomposed state along the banks of the Kafubu River.
He said officers from the Fire Brigade and Public Health Department assisted in retrieving the body from the river.
“The body was inspected and no physical injuries or cuts were observed. No foul play is suspected, and a sudden and unnatural death inquiry file has since been opened,” he said.
Mr Yuyi said the body was later taken to Kantolomba Cemetery, where it was buried with the consent of family members present.
