Residents of Mpika District have been given renewed hope following government’s confirmation that construction works on the long-awaited Michael Chilufya Sata General Hospital will soon resume after the project was re-tendered.
Muchinga Province Permanent Secretary Dr. Tuesday Bwalya said government remains committed to completing the health facility, which has remained unfinished for years despite its importance to the district and surrounding communities.
Dr. Bwalya explained that the hospital was initially designed to be completed in three phases. However, construction stalled after the completion of only Phase One, which comprised the administration block and staff offices.
“Instead of progressing through all the planned phases, the project stopped at Phase One,” he said.
The Permanent Secretary revealed that the Ministry of Health has since re-tendered the project, paving the way for the commencement of Phase Two works. This will later be followed by Phase Three, which includes the construction of staff housing.
He assured residents that government is working to expedite the project and ensure the hospital is completed in line with its original design.
Dr. Bwalya noted that once fully operational, the Michael Chilufya Sata General Hospital will greatly enhance healthcare service delivery in Mpika and surrounding areas by increasing the facility’s capacity to accommodate and attend to more patients.
The development has been welcomed by residents, who have long awaited the completion of the hospital, which is expected to play a key role in improving access to quality healthcare services in the district and the wider Muchinga Province.
